Joel Test #9: Do you use the best tools money can buy?

by Max Wenzin

As you may know, I am very fond of The Joel Test.

Currently, I am writing specifications for new hardware (dev computers) for the three Scrum teams that I manage. I wonder where the limit for “the best tools money can buy” is? 2 monitors? 3? RAIDed Solid State Drives? I suppose it depends on whos money it is!

Anyway, when the new computers arrive I hope we can give ourselves a better score at the Joel Test #9: Do you use the best tools money can buy?

Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Launch

by Max Wenzin

Tomorrow I will be attending the “Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Launch” at the Hilton Hotel Slussen, Stockholm, Sweden.

Hoping it will give me some good insights and opportunities related to a BI project at Expekt.com.

Will let you know if Oracle are evil bastards or just misunderstood capitalists. ;-)

The Joel Test

by Max Wenzin

One of the many tools at disposal and a reference to the company name (Better Code) is The Joel Test. I keep it here to remind myself of the simple prerequisites of successful software development!

The Joel Test

  1. Do you use source control?
  2. Can you make a build in one step?
  3. Do you make daily builds?
  4. Do you have a bug database?
  5. Do you fix bugs before writing new code?
  6. Do you have an up-to-date schedule?
  7. Do you have a spec?
  8. Do programmers have quiet working conditions?
  9. Do you use the best tools money can buy?
  10. Do you have testers?
  11. Do new candidates write code during their interview?
  12. Do you do hallway usability testing?

I keep this list here to always keep it in mind! For the full article, see The Joel Test.
